Inflation in Britain unexpectedly surged to its highest level in five months in October, adding to the pain for already hard-pressed households.
The Office for National Statistics said that consumer prices inflation jumped to 2.7 per cent last month, from 2.2 per cent in September. Analysts had expected a reading of 2.3 per cent.
The retail prices index, which is used as the benchmark for many wage deals, rose to 3.2 per cent, from 2.6 per cent.
