(AP) ? Victoria Azarenka was back to her top-ranked self at the French Open on Wednesday.

The Australian Open champion from Belarus easily advanced to the third round at Roland Garros by beating Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany 6-1, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

In the first round, Azarenka struggled early before winning 12 of the final 14 games to advance. She committed 60 unforced errors in that opening match, but brought that number down to only 11 on Wednesday.

Azarenka reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year, matching her best performance at the clay-court Grand Slam.

U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur also advanced, beating Irina Falconi of the United States 6-1, 6-4.

Later Wednesday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic was playing Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia, and 2009 champion Roger Federer was scheduled to face Adrian Ungur of Romania. In the women's tournament, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was to play Venus Williams in the last match on Chatrier.

On Tuesday, Serena Williams showed that, even after 13 Grand Slam championships and dozens of other titles, she is capable of throwing away a big lead.

Williams led 5-1 in the second-set tiebreaker and was two points from victory nine times but still lost to Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 ? the first time she has ever lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament.

"I definitely was nervous. I'm always a little nervous in every match I play, which I think is a little bit healthy," said the fifth-seeded Williams, who had been 46-0 in the first round of majors. "I was definitely a little nervous."

Williams entered the tournament with a 17-0 record on clay this year. And it looked like No. 18 was in the bag late in the second set.

But Razzano won six straight points to take the set and then won five straight games in the third.

"I just felt I couldn't get a ball in play," Williams said. "You know, when I did, I just felt like I was hitting late and, I mean, how can you hit late on a clay court? It was kind of odd."

Defending men's champion Rafael Nadal had no such trouble, starting his quest for a record seventh French Open title by beating Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Maria Sharapova had an even easier time, scoring a "double bagel" in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexandra Cadantu of Romania.

"I feel like with every year I have improved," Sharapova said, "and I enjoy it much more."

NOLA filmmaker Benh Zeitlin wins Camera d'Or award at Cannes Film Festival

Posted by Ken Korman on Sun, May 27, 2012 at 1:10 PM

New Orleans filmmaker Benh Zeitlin won the coveted Camera d'Or prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival today for his new film Beasts of the Southern Wild. The Camera d'Or is awarded each year at Cannes to the best film by a first-time director. Beasts also won the grand jury prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival. It's very unusual for a film to win top awards at both Sundance and Cannes.

According to live blogging by England's daily national newspaper The Guardian, Zeitlin said "Thank you to everybody at home" even before remembering to thank the jury and the Festival.

This year's Palm d'Or?the top prize at Cannes?was awarded to Amour, by Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke.

Cairo's poor hope new president will help them

CAIRO ? As Egyptians took part in the country's first free presidential election, residents of one of Cairo's poorest quarters expressed hope that a new leader would help them with a simple request ? finding a new home.

Thousands of Cairo's poor live in the City of the Dead, a centuries-old necropolis replete with tombs and mausoleums that spreads out in a vast patchwork at the foot of the Mokattam Hills.

The conditions are cramped among the tombs. Children play with toys alongside gravestones that double as makeshift tables and shelves. Residents have sealed over graves to make kitchen or bedroom floors. Laundry hangs from clotheslines stretched between two tombstones.

"I have spent 25 years in cemeteries. No one checks on us and I live on only 200 pounds ($30) a month," said local resident Nadera Samir.

For some, living among the dead is a source of anxiety and nightmares.

"When one sleeps next to or on top of the dead he feels like he is in a twister, he feels like he is drowning in the sea," said one resident, Fekry Masoud.

Those living in the district expressed mixed feelings about the presidential election, which concluded Thursday.

Some backed veterans of ousted President Hosni Mubarak's regime, believing only they can ensure security and stability.

"Regardless of the fact that Mubarak was corrupt, life was easier, life was a lot cheaper," said one woman.

Others are horrified by the thought of a return to the regime.

Whatever the case, most have a simple request for the new president ? not to forget them.

"What will be helpful is getting good food and a good place to live," said resident Sayeda Mohammed.

CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE'S AMENDMENT TO ...

It is now commonly understood that breast cancer is not one form of cancer, but many different subtypes of cancer, says Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

Washington, DC ? Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee released the following statement in regards to her amendment dealing with important study of Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) being accepted to the National Defense Authorization Act:

?I am pleased that my amendment to direct the Department of Defense (DOD) Office of Health to work in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide resources to identify specific genetic and molecular targets and biomarkers for Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) was accepted to today?s important Defense Bill. My amendment would require DOD and NIH to provide information useful in biomarker selection, drug discovery, and clinical trials design that will enable both TNBC patients to be identified earlier in the progression of their disease and develop multiple targeted therapies for the disease.

?My amendment is designed to advance the study of triple negative breast cancer which is an aggressive and deadly type of breast cancer. Currently, 70% of women with metastatic triple negative breast cancer do not live more than five years after being diagnosed. TNBC accounts for between 13% and 25% of all breast cancer in the United States. It is essential to support research to identify multifaceted targeted treatments for this type of breast cancer.

?TNBC is an extremely deadly form of breast cancer. Unlike traditional forms of breast cancer there are no targeted treatments for TNBC. Additional research is necessary to find the molecular cause for TNBC in order to develop an effective treatment regime.

?It is only in the last few years that professionals studying breast cancer have concluded that breast cancer is not one disease, but many different forms of cancer all originating in the breast. Depending on its stage of diagnosis, triple negative breast cancer can be extremely aggressive and more likely to recur and metastasize than other subtypes of breast cancer. It typically is responsive to chemotherapy, although it can be more difficult to treat because it is unresponsive to the most effective receptor targeted treatments.

?There is no question that researchers are increasingly recognizing the importance of TNBC as an entity and focusing their efforts on several key areas. Hopefully this amendment will help define exactly what comprises TNBC and developing more sensitive biomarkers for identifying which patients have this disease. ?

PFT: Kitna goes from QB to high-school teacher

Vikings Stadium FootballAP

With the Minnesota Legislature officially signing off over a week ago on a new stadium for the Vikings and the Minneapolis City Council less than a week from applying (or not) its official approval to the project, Governor Mark Dayton recently explained his support for the effort in an interview with Minnesota Public Radio.

Asked whether the citizens of Minnesota got the best deal possible, Dayton offered up a lengthy, but informative, reply.

?I believe it?s the best deal available under the circumstances,? Dayton said.? ?I?m not one to defend the economics of professional sports.? It?s a world unto itself.? Any deal you make in that world doesn?t make sense from the way the rest of us look at it.? That?s just a given.

?The bottom line was:? do we want to create several thousand jobs by building this new facility?? Do we want to keep the Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota?? Do we want an NFL franchise here in our state?? We accomplished all that.? We?re going to have a chance to build something that I think Minnesotans can be very proud of.? It?s going to distinguish the city of Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota for decades to come.

?It can be used 355 days a year when the Vikings aren?t playing in it as the people?s stadium, for all sorts of other uses that will enhance the quality of life in our state.? Time will tell whether we get a deal or not, I think it?s going to be a good deal when we look back with the perspective of time.?

Dayton?s point is a valid one.? Regardless of whether it?s ?right? or ?wrong? or ?competition? or ?extortion,? the presence of 32 NFL teams in a country with more than 30 metropolitan areas that want to host one means that the metropolitan areas that currently host an NFL team may, from time to time, have to take steps to keep the NFL team from moving to one of the metropolitan areas that don?t.

Especially when there are now a couple of metropolitan areas outside of the country that may be interested in hosting an NFL team, too.

And to the extent there?s any confusion as to whether the Vikings and the NFL would have gone to one of the other metropolitan areas, Dayton was unequivocal as to the choice the Vikings faced.

?[W]hat the Vikings and the NFL impressed upon us, is that we can?t do it both ways,? Dayton said.? ?We can?t not do a new stadium.? We can?t just keep the team here on that basis.? It?s either do we want a new stadium?? Do we want the thousands of jobs it will create?? Do we want to keep the Vikings here and move forward?? Or do we want to just say goodbye?? The majority of the Legislature, and I think the majority of the people of Minnesota, were in favor of continuing.?

So while some may have real ? and legitimate ? problems with taxpayer money being used to make a rich man even richer, sometimes those concerns need to be set aside, or else the NFL franchise may step aside.

96% First Position

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (43) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.

Magically upbeat and exhilarating in spirit. Particularly noteworthy is the way director Bess Kargman manages to address a few world issues with great hopefulness.

EBRD-East Europe wary of fresh euro bank crunch

LONDON (Reuters) - A new banking crunch in the euro zone risks another sharp retreat by western parent banks from vulnerable economies in central and eastern Europe, a process that must be slowed to preserve growth, officials from the region said on Friday.

Countries backing Europe's development bank for the former communist bloc elected a new president - for the first time from non-euro member Britain - just as fears grow that a Greek exit from the currency could hit emerging Europe's lenders.

Many east European countries outside the euro have banks wholly or largely owned by western parents, which are reducing lending as they try to fix balance sheets damaged by the sovereign debt crisis. They fear another sudden or sharp pullback to home markets could be devastating.

"The financial system continues to be vulnerable and the need to deleverage continues to be very strong," Polish central bank chief Marek Belka told delegates at the annual meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

"This deleveraging is potentially more dangerous in countries with a high presence of foreign banks."

Belka, who chided policymakers from richer economies for their inability to control the crisis, said this reduction of bank lending and debts, or deleveraging, was necessary but that the pace and location of it must be managed carefully.

"The so-called west has lost its monopoly for wisdom and I'm saying it without Schadenfreude," he said.

The shareholders of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development elected Britain's most senior civil servant, Suma Chakrabarti, as president, replacing Germany's Thomas Mirow.

Mirow, whose campaign failed to get Berlin's backing, said EBRD-sponsored efforts to slow deleveraging had worked in the past two years but a threat of flight by western banks remained.

"What we are clearly seeing is that western banks that have engaged in the region without putting CEE (central and eastern Europe) into the focus of their activities tend to retrench and to sell off their assets," he said.

Mirow expressed particular concern about countries where subsidiaries of Greek banks have played an important role, with Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia seen as most vulnerable.

GROWTH HEADWINDS

The EBRD, set up in 1991 to manage the transition of former communist countries to market economies but with a recently-expanded remit to North Africa and the Middle East, predicted a substantial growth slowdown in its monitored economies in 2012.

Renewed fears about the euro zone crisis present new risks for the region's economies, which are already struggling to grow as the crisis hits their main trading partners in the euro zone.

It has also complicated efforts by the few countries still trying to join the single currency, with Latvia's finance minister saying its goal to join in 2014 was now in the balance.

"At this moment we are sticking to our euro zone strategy. Definitely we will be able to meet all the Maastricht criteria next spring. But of course the final solution will depend on the situation in the euro zone," Andris Vilks told Reuters.

In the EBRD's latest economic outlook for the whole region, which for the first time includes four countries in the Middle East and North Africa, the EBRD forecast expansion of 3.1 per cent in 2012, after 4.6 per cent in 2011. The Bank's economists see only a modest pick up to 3.7 per cent next year.

Although recent data suggests that capital outflows from the region may be leveling off, negative real credit growth and declining exports will continue to impede expansion, it said.

Before the crisis, euro zone lenders saw the region as a main profit driver because of faster growth and low lending levels, but they have been reducing exposure to the region since the end of last year with deleveraging that has squeezed lending even as many countries in the region slide into recession.

Foreign banks control 60-90 percent of the region's banking assets. The International Monetary Fund says the outflow could lead to a drop of up to 6 percent of private credit in central and Eastern Europe in 2012 and 2013 in a downside scenario.

The so-called Vienna Initiative to slow the western bank exit from the region in 2009, which was jointly sponsored by the EBRD, the International Monetary Fund, national bank regulators and private lenders, was reprised this year.

The EBRD warned it expected bank-related outflows to continue from eastern Europe in coming months as western lenders step up efforts to strengthen their balance sheets.

The central bank governors of Poland and Hungary also said sales of local subsidiaries by Western banks remain a major concern for policymakers.

Pot Might Help Ease Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

MONDAY, May 14 (HealthDay News) -- Smoking pot can help relieve muscle tightness, called spasticity, and pain in people with multiple sclerosis, a new, small study suggests.

"Spasticity is a major problem [in multiple sclerosis]," explained study author Dr. Jody Corey-Bloom, director of the University of California, San Diego Multiple Sclerosis Center. "People get very tight and it hurts, it feels like charley horses."

Medicines are available, but they don't help everyone, she added.

In the study, Corey-Bloom and her colleagues looked at 30 multiple sclerosis patients with muscle tightness who weren't helped by conventional medicines, and discovered they found relief by smoking pot. "Smoking pot reduces the spasticity by about a third compared to patients on [an inactive] placebo," she said.

The study is published in the May 14 issue of the CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

More than 400,000 people in the United States have multiple sclerosis, or MS, a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Symptoms can be mild, such as numbness, or much more severe, such as paralysis and vision loss.

Experts don't know the cause of multiple sclerosis. Research is focusing on the immune system, genetics and other factors.

Over the years, Corey-Bloom had heard some of her patients who smoked pot tell her it helped ease the symptoms of their disease, but she was skeptical. Research in medical literature was mostly on cannabinoids given orally, she said. And the studies tended to rely on subjective measures, just asking the patients if their symptoms improved.

So, she decided to do some research using smoked cannabis.

The average age of the 30 adults studied was about 50 years. Two-thirds needed walking aids, and one-fifth used wheelchairs.

Corey-Bloom randomly assigned the men and women to smoke either marijuana or a placebo joint once daily for three days. They did so in a special, well-ventilated research room.

After an 11-day "washout" period, the men and women returned for another session. Again, they smoked either the marijuana or a placebo once daily for three days. This time, they were assigned to the opposite group.

Before and after each session, the researchers measured the participants' muscle stiffness using an accepted scale. They also evaluated pain levels, tested certain thinking skills and looked at fatigue levels.

On average, the patients had about a three-point reduction on the spasticity scale. "It's a modest effect," said Corey-Bloom.

"It also reduced the patients' perception of pain," she added. Pain scores showed a 50 percent decrease in perceived pain.

Downsides included increased fatigue, she said. Cognitive (thinking) skills also declined in the pot-smoking participants. "There were some short-term, modest effects on cognition -- primarily attention and concentration," she noted.

The pot probably works, she said, by acting on special receptors in the brain involved in controlling muscle spasticity.

Nicholas LaRocca, vice president of health care delivery and policy research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said the study was well done.

"For people with MS, spasticity is a major problem," he said. "Although treatments are available, they don't work for everyone with MS."

While the study showed good short-term effects of the cannabis, LaRocca said, "the study does show that smoking marijuana is not a long-term solution, because of the cognitive effects."

People with multiple sclerosis are already likely to have cognitive defects, he noted.

"We need to continue to search for not only other medicines for plasticity, but nonpharmacologic treatments," LaRocca said.

The study was funded by the University of California's Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research.

A typical marijuana cigarette has 0.5 grams of marijuana, according to ProCon.org, a nonprofit that discusses controversial issues such as medical marijuana. Average patient cost is about $8.57 per joint, it said.

To relieve spasticity, people with multiple sclerosis can also ask a physical therapist to show them exercises, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Another option is to get braces or splints prescribed to keep the leg in a more normal position and improve spasticity.
