Control Me by Jay Christian CD Book Reviews | NRTeam Member ...

In a world of music where creativity is often lacking, it's rare to find artists whose works are truly original and different. Jay Tholen is one of those whose music is totally different than anything else out there. His avant-garde brand of chip-tunes is way out there; literally. "Avant-garde", as defined by the dicitonary, represents pushing the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm; especially in the arts.

In the words of Jay Tholen - "I layered the songs beyond recognition until they became what they are now: schizophrenic heaps of sound. Everything from Shoegaze to Prog Rock to Schmaltzy 50's Pop is emulated beneath layers of manipulated waveforms and vinyl samples."

This very well describes Control Me as a whole. Tunes like "Time Transcendent" contain weird vocal parts and a lot of electronic blips and bleeps mixed together with other odd instrumental pieces and samples that sound like 90's Nintendo game music. Tholen's vocal and lyrical style is very similar to that of Keith Green, as well. He doesn't have the best voice, but his vocals fit in well with the music. This also means that Control Me is a very spiritual record. "Be Alright" contains the line, "Jesus will be lifted high, and that will have to be alright with you." This well sums up the focus of the record.

Overall, I think that Control Me is a great album. Many won't like it, no doubt, because of the extremely weird and sometimes obnoxious electronic blips and bleeps; not to mention Tholen's unpolished vocals. However, Jay Tholen is really a talented artist, and with this record he has created something completely different and original, and you have to at least give him credit for that.
