BEIJING ? Outspoken artist Ai Weiwei says Chinese authorities are now seeking $2.3 million in back taxes and fines from him. He says he has refused to accept the official notice served on him.
Ai was released on bail in June after nearly three months in secret detention. Chinese authorities said he confessed to tax evasion but his family denies he evaded any taxes. They say he is being targeted for criticizing the Communist government.
Ai says tax officials delivered a notice to him Tuesday. It said he was to pay 15 million yuan within 10 days or face unspecified further measures.
Ai says he won't pay until his design company's account books are returned and he discusses the matter with his former office manager and accountant. He has not been allowed to see them.
