Chris Wallace Calls Out GOP on Govt. Shutdown: Are You 'Prepared to Shoot' the Hostage?

Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday called the Republican Party's bluff and asked if lawmakers were prepared to "shoot the hostage" and shut down the federal government if President Barack Obama refused to defund his healthcare reform law.

During a talk with the conservative Heritage Foundation last week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) suggested that Obama and Democrats, not Republicans, would be to blame if the government was shut down.

"Under no circumstances will I support a continuing resolution that funds even one penny of Obamacare," Cruz explained. "The next step will be that President Obama and [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid will scream and yell, ?Why are those mean and nasty Republicans threatening to shut down the government over Obamacare???

?We?ve got to stand up and make the argument and win the argument that, ?No, that?s not true. We have voted to fund the federal government. We want to fund the federal government. Why is President Obama threatening to shut down the federal government? Because he wants force Obamacare down people?s throats.??

On Sunday, Wallace told Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint that some of his fellow Republicans had called that idea "suicidal" and "the dumbest idea I've ever heard."

"What about the Republicans who say it's crazy to hold the government funding hostage?" Wallace wondered.

"This is a very destructive law that's going to hurt our country, it's going to hurt a lot of people," DeMint insisted. "This may be the last opportunity to stop it. Now, there's no Republican that I'm aware of that wants to shut the government down. The whole point is we need to fund the government, but we should not fund Obamacare."

"But, Senator, what they say, you know, is you don't take a hostage unless you're prepared to shoot him," Wallace pointed out. "And if you're going to go down this road, are you prepared to shut down the government? Because the Democrats are not going to go along with this."

"I wouldn't shut down the government, but if Obama would not accept a funding bill for the government, that fully funds the government, because it didn't have his failed law in it then he would be shutting down the government," DeMint opined. "And that's the case we're going to take to the American people in August."

Inhabitat's Week in Green: zero-distortion mirror, stem cell hamburger and a tent that fits in a sneaker

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

It's been a big week for planes, trains and automobiles as California (finally) announced plans to break ground on the US' first high-speed rail and we speculated on just how Elon Musk's 600MPH Hyperloop train will work. Inhabitat also brought you the scoop on BMW's 2014 i3, which is the world's first electric vehicle made mostly from carbon fiber. Green vehicles proved they could go the distance as a 65-year-old man embarked on a 1,200-mile journey in a solar-powered tricycle, and a crop of green-roofed buses brought lush air-purifying plants to congested city centers. And if you're planning an outdoor adventure this summer, you won't want to miss this caravan that doubles as a boat, Mini's new ultra compact luxury campers and the full-sized tent that fits in a pair of sneakers.

5 Great American White-Water Rafting Destinations

August 4, 2013 10:00 AM Text Size: A . A . A White-water rafting can be a great summer escapade, and it's easy to tailor a trip for your crew. For families with young children, a tame river might be the best option. To jolt the teens, rivers akin to crazy roller-coaster rides are the way to go. You can organize a trip to fit any time frame too: overnight outings, day trips, half-day trips, or just an easy float.

First you need to learn the lingo. Here's a quick guide to the kinds of rapids:

? Class I is a nice, gentle ride. This is good for rafters who prefer to float at a leisurely pace.
? Class II involves mild rapids and waves up to 3 feet tall. These rivers are fairly easy to move around in.
? Class III is where the excitement starts to build. There's a good chance of getting wet because waves can be up to 4 feet tall.
? Class IV is not for the faint of heart. Passages are constricted, rapids are long and challenging, and the rafting guide has to operate the craft precisely.
? Class V is like Class IV and then some. It's a pure adrenaline rush.

Some of the best U.S. rivers for a rapids adventures include:

? The American River in California. This river is located in the oak-studded Sierra Nevada foothills. The South Fork of the American River, which flows into the Sacramento River, is a great section for beginners. For a bit more topsy-turvy action, the Middle Fork boasts a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids. It's set in a canyon 2000 feet deep and is surrounded by numerous historic sites from the gold rush era.
? The Colorado River near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While 4 million people visit the Grand Canyon every year, fewer than 22,000 go white-water rafting in Arizona. Rafters can float through Grand Canyon National Park, starting just below Lake Powell and ending at Lake Mead. This stretch of water offers a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids.
? The Salmon River in Idaho. The Lower and Middle Forks of the Salmon are part of a 100-mile-plus course that has beginner and intermediate rapids. The lower section is especially suited for kids. With milder rapids and sandy beaches, many families love this wildlife adventure.
? The Chattooga River in Georgia and South Carolina. This river features three sections: sections II, III, and IV, which correspond with the class of rapids in each portion. Section II is relaxing. The surroundings are steeped in Native American history and feature an array of wildlife. Section III provides more action and is more challenging, with some serious rapids.
? Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. This is a great 74-mile river that's within reach for East Coast residents. Sections of the river are calm enough for small children, offering a relaxing float. Other parts offer up more white-water exploits for intermediate and advanced rafters. Another plus: The season is on the long side, generally lasting from April to September.

Would-be rafters should always check with guiding companies to confirm when trips are offered and to note any age requirements. Most rafting outfitters have a guide on each raft. Life jackets and helmets are usually required, and some companies offer wet suits during the colder spring months.

Iranians may have abducted Briton in Dubai - government source

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is taking seriously allegations that a British-Iranian citizen who went missing in Dubai in June may have been kidnapped by "elements in Iran", a government source in London said on Saturday.

Abbas Yazdi was reported missing on June 25 and his wife Atena has told Dubai-based news website 7Days that she fears he may have been kidnapped by Iranian intelligence officers.

"We believe that allegations that elements in Iran might be responsible for Mr Yazdi's disappearance are plausible, and we are taking them very seriously," the source told Reuters.

The Foreign Office said it was in contact with the authorities in Dubai and in Iran about the case and was providing consular assistance to Yazdi's family.

"We have asked the Iranians for any information they have about Mr Yazdi's whereabouts," a spokeswoman said.

"We are very concerned about Mr Yazdi's welfare."

Foreign Secretary William Hague raised Yazdi's disappearance with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi during a telephone conversation on July 31.

Britain is among Western nations at odds with Iran over its nuclear programme and other issues. It shut its embassy in Tehran after what it called "an attack by government-sponsored militias" on the mission in November 2011. Iran's embassy in London was also closed.

The 7Days website cited Yazdi's wife as saying the 44-year-old trader and investor was a close childhood friend of the son of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Atena Yazdi was quoted as saying that her husband had been detained in Iran in 1993 and held in solitary confinement by the intelligence service for six months. He had later travelled to London and obtained British citizenship, she said.

The couple had moved to Dubai 10 years ago, 7Days said.

The Foreign Office spokeswoman declined to comment on the details of the report or to release any details about Yazdi's background.

U.S. judge denies class certification sought by women suing Wal-Mart

By Casey Sullivan and Dan Levine

(Reuters) - In another setback for women suing Wal-Mart, a U.S. judge in San Francisco on Friday rejected an attempt to bring reformulated sex discrimination claims against the company as a class action.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer denied a motion for class certification brought by plaintiffs seeking to represent 150,000 women in Wal-Mart's California offices who alleged the world's largest retailer denied them pay raises and promotions because of their gender.

The claims were filed as a reformulated lawsuit after the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a larger class-action sex discrimination against Wal-Mart Stores Inc in 2011 that claimed female employees at 3,400 Walmart stores nationwide were underpaid and given fewer promotions.

The California lawsuit was part of a broader strategy by women Wal-Mart workers to bring more narrowly tailored class actions in an attempt to seek damages, targeting Wal-Mart's employment practices in regions throughout the country.

Instead of relying on nationwide statistical patterns and anecdotal evidence provided by plaintiffs, the California lawsuit had alleged specific discriminatory statements made by the district and regional managers that have decision-making authority over pay and promotions.

Breyer said in his ruling that the women could not bring their allegations as a class action because they had not established that their claims of the company's employment practice were linked to a class-wide policy.

But he said: "This order does not consider whether plaintiffs themselves were victims of discrimination as alleged in their complaint; those individual claims shall proceed in this litigation."

Still, Breyer took issue with some of the merits of the plaintiffs case. For one, he said that the women did not identify statistically significant disparities in pay and promotion decisions throughout the California regions at issue.

Breyer also noted that the women said they had anecdotes reflecting stereotyped views expressed by a number of regional managers, but only offered evidence of bias exhibited by about five percent of the top level management that they say guided lower-level decisions.

"Though plaintiffs succeeded in illustrating attitudes of gender bias held by managers at Wal-Mart, they failed to marshal significant proof that intentional discrimination was a general policy affecting the entire class," Breyer said.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said in a statement that the company has had a strong policy against discrimination in place for many years, and that the allegations from the plaintiffs were not representative of the positive experiences of other women working at Wal-Mart.

"Judge Breyer gave the plaintiffs every opportunity to offer any evidence they wanted, and their evidence comes up short," said Theodore Boutrous, a lawyer representing Wal-Mart. "We are gratified."

Randy Renick, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a statement that plaintiffs were "deeply disappointed" with the court's decision and intended to appeal the ruling.

"While this court decision does not in any way negate the merits of the pay and promotion discrimination case against Wal-Mart, it does create yet another hurdle for these women to at long last have their day in court," he said.

Actors with fake guns bring police with real ones

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? College filmmakers were using fake guns to shoot a robbery scene at a suburban Los Angeles coffee shop when the movie took a scary twist that wasn't in the script.

Eight police officers were descending on the masked actors. The police were real, with very real guns drawn, and had no idea this was a movie.

"Drop the gun! Drop it! Drop it!" one officer yells on an audio recording police were carrying.

One of the actors immediately let go of his fake assault rifle. But another held onto his replica handgun, forcing officers to make a life-or-death choice. An officer knocked the gun from the actor's hand and handcuffed him, drawing a peaceful climax to what could have been something far worse.

"One of the officers made the decision that had the man moved, he would have been killed," said Glendora police Capt. Tim Staab. "It was just milliseconds from a tragedy."

Police said it showed the dangers of movie-making for amateur film crews who don't get permits and follow proper steps before taking to the streets.

"I can't think of a situation more dangerous than having a gun in your hand with cops responding," Staab said. "It was much closer than we ever want to get close to."

Attempts to reach the film's director were unsuccessful. The students declined to tell police what college they were from.

The officers responded to the shop after receiving a 911 call from a woman who reported seeing an armed, masked gunman inside Classic Coffee in Glendora, a suburb east of Los Angeles that rarely sees Hollywood film crews.

Police said there was nothing to indicate a short movie was being shot. No one was outside to warn customers, there were no signs, and no permit had been pulled.

When officers arrived, there was no question in their mind that a robbery was occurring, Staab said.

It's rare "to go into a coffee shop and see someone carrying an AR-15 rifle and wearing a mask," he said.

Under normal filming protocols, weapons carried by the actors have orange markings to indicate they are replicas. But the markings on the guns used by the students had been covered by a black pen, presumably to make the weapons look more realistic.

Staab said one of the masked men, apparently startled by the real-life response, held the fake gun by his side, pointed toward the ground. When he didn't drop it, Staab said, an officer did something unusual ? he stripped it from the man's hand and sent the gun falling to the floor.

After the man was handcuffed, the officer is heard on the audiotape asking what was going on. Somebody says a film was being made.

"You are shooting a short film?" the officer asks. "In a store with a man with a gun?"

The students were allowed to keep the fake weapons and weren't facing any charges. They were given a lecture by officers about the dangers they created and went on their way.

Chinese court rules against J&J in monopoly suit

Healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has become the latest global company accused of misconduct in China after a court ordered it to pay damages to a local distributor in a lawsuit brought under an anti-monopoly law.

The ruling by a Shanghai court expands use of the five-year-old law and comes amid a flurry of Chinese investigations of possible bribery, price-fixing and other misconduct by global companies.

The court, in a ruling issued on Thursday, said J&J was guilty of ?vertical monopoly? for setting minimum prices for surgical sutures. It said that caused the Chinese distributor to lose potential sales and awarded 530,000 yuan (US$85,000) for lost profits.

Telephone calls to Johnson & Johnson?s offices in Beijing and Shanghai were not answered.

Chinese news reports said the case was the first time a court ruled against a Fortune 500 company in an anti-monopoly case.

The judge, Ding Wenlian (???), said the ruling reflected the law?s intention of protecting consumers and ?public interests,? according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Johnson & Johnson was accused of improperly setting minimum sale prices to maintain its image as a premium brand, according to a court announcement.

It said the company has since stopped imposing that condition on distributors.

Setting minimum prices for distributors or retailers or prohibiting price-cutting is a standard strategy for makers of luxury goods and other products or services that want to be seen as a premium product.

The lawsuit by Rainbow Medical Equipment & Supply Co said it lost its contract with J&J in 2009 after it submitted a bid to supply sutures to a Beijing hospital at a price below the US company?s standard. Rainbow Medical said it had worked for J&J for 15 years.

A Shanghai court rejected a lawsuit by Rainbow Medical seeking 14 million yuan.

However, a higher court ordered J&J to reimburse it for lost profits due to violations of the anti-monopoly law.

ANN ARBOR: University of Michigan launches new clinic for 'high-risk' prostate cancer

Dr. Ganesh Palapattu, director of the new high-risk prostate cancer clinic at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

ANN ARBOR ? While every year about 30,000 men die of prostate cancer in the United States, the most common cause of death in men with prostate cancer is heart disease. That?s because not all prostate cancers are the same. Some are slow-growing while others are very aggressive.

?The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center has started a new clinic focused on men with the fast-growing type of cancer. This kind of high risk disease is thought to possess a high likelihood of causing harm.

?These men will likely need more than one treatment because we know these types of cancers tend to recur. Patients with aggressive cancer need extra attention and a high level of care, including genetic information and a consensus opinion from different experts,? says Dr. Ganesh Palapattu, director of urologic oncology and director of the new high-risk prostate cancer clinic at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

?The clinic brings together experts in urology, medical oncology, radiation oncology and pathology. All of these specialists review cases together, discussing each patient?s unique factors and agreeing on the best treatment plan.

Patients also receive free cancer genome sequencing along with several recently introduced predictive genetic tests. Clinical trials are offered when appropriate.

?For patient Jeffrey Roberge, 49, the idea of all the experts working to a consensus opinion helped make the process easier.

Roberge was diagnosed with prostate cancer in August 2012. His cancer had not spread but was at high risk to do so. Roberge underwent surgery in January and has had regular PSA tests since ? all of which have come back negative for cancer.

?It?s daunting when you?re not a professional and you don?t understand all the options. When you have several doctors giving you their shared opinion, it makes it easier to help you make your own decision,? Roberge says. ?I didn?t feel like I was floating around on my own trying to figure it out. We were all moving through the process together. That?s comforting.?

?The high-risk prostate cancer clinic also offers survivorship services, including a team of social workers and other health care providers who help patients and their families deal with the challenges that go along with a cancer diagnosis.

As evidence grows that no two cancers are the same, doctors are more and more focusing on precision medicine, in which the particular genes, proteins or other markers in an individual?s tumor tell doctors what kind of drug might be more effective ? and what might be less effective. It allows patients to avoid drugs that are not likely to work for them. Continued...

?While prostate tumors may look the same from one patient to the next under a microscope, they may behave quite differently. This kind of behavior is driven largely by the genetics, the DNA sequencing of the cancer. Information about this DNA sequence or genetic sequence can be helpful in the future as we tailor therapy for a patient if the cancer recurs or comes back again after initial therapy,? Palapattu says.

?We treat patients, not diseases. Our goal is to offer individualized treatment plans focused on each individual,? he adds.

What is high-risk prostate cancer?

Doctors start with the results of blood tests and biopsies to guide the classification of high-risk prostate cancer. The key is that these are tumors likely to return or spread and cause poor outcomes.

Some of the markers that come into play include:

? Gleason score (8 or more)

? PSA score (20 or more)

? Advanced stage (T3 or higher)

? Relapse after prior surgery or radiation therapy

?To make an appointment with the high-risk prostate cancer clinic, call the U-M Cancer AnswerLine at 800-865-1125. Continued...

The 16 kinds of sports fans

You are a snowflake?a tiny and unique gift that will come to Earth only once, and no other person in the world is quite like you.

That's complete B.S., actually?there are a lot of people out there like you, which is comforting to a certain degree?especially for sports fans. No one wants to watch the game with a bunch of people they have nothing in common with. No one would speak, and the couch would runneth over with awkward sauce.

That being said, while you and your buddies share a love for your team and the sport, you're likely not all the same kind of fan.

Most sports fans are viewed by non-sports supporters (muggles) as the same creature, but truth be told, there are about 16 different classes of sports fan in the world. The following is a brief breakdown of those classes' characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.

Some are good, some are bad. Some are a little bit of both. The question is, which one are you?

OS X Mavericks preview: Sprite Kit simplifies 2D game development

OS X Mavericks preview: Sprite Kit simplifies 2D game development

New technology coming to OS X Mavericks promises to make it easier for indie gamers to support the platform with 2D arcade-style games. What's more, it's portable between Mavericks and iOS 7. Sprite Kit promises to reinvent the way 2D games are made for the Mac.

Sure, 3D games are cool, but there's been a strong push over the past few years to produce killer games with "old school" appeal - games that reference the 2D platformers, puzzlers and action games of old. After all, many gamers these days grew up in the shadow of Nintendo consoles - heck, some of us old farts even had Ataris, back in the day - and feel really comfortable playing those types of games.

Apple is answering the call by rolling its own frameworks for 2D game development, which it calls Sprite Kit. "Sprites" in 2D game development parlance are the animated characters you see in a computer game - the character you control, the bad guys, the bullets and missiles, and all the other elements of a scene in a game that's overlaid on top of the background.

But Sprite Kit controls a lot more than just characters in games. It's a complete engine for managing things like in-game physics. It also provides a particle system that helps developers produce more realistic effects like fire, smoke and explosions. That can save developers a lot of time from having to learn how to do these things using low-level technology like OpenGL, the graphics open standard that OS X supports.

Here's what Apple says on its public web page for Mavericks developers:

Create high-performing 2D games with the powerful new Sprite Kit framework, which allows you to control sprite attributes such as position, size, rotation, gravity, and mass. Sprite Kit?s OpenGL-based renderer efficiently animates 2D scenes.

Why Sprite Kit is a good idea

There are plenty of "middleware" offerings from software development companies who make money by licensing their technology to game developers who want to develop titles, but don't want to "roll their own" low level technology to handle things line in-game physics and animation. Some of those licenses are available at low cost, too, or in some cases, free, depending on how many copies of the game are sold.

But that technology is, by and large, not custom-designed specifically for OS X and iOS. Sprite Kit's different is that it's home-grown by Apple, so developers can expect better integration with Apple's Xcode development environment and better support at the core operating system level.

That's a net win for developers who begin to use the new technology, since maintaining compatibility with new operating system releases and changes to core Apple technology can be a real pain.

Sprite Kit won't have all the same features as more mature and robust game development engines will, at least not right off the bat. But it'll be enough for game developers to produce some compelling titles right away, and just like other core OS technology and development frameworks, Apple's certain to improve it over time.

Bridging the gap between iOS and OS X

In so many ways, Apple is trying to sensibly erase the line between using an iOS device and using a Mac - we see this in Mavericks technologies like iCloud Keychain, which just work regardless of which device you're using.

Sprite Kit exists very much in that realm - it's a technology that will be supported both by iOS 7 and Mavericks, to make it easier for developers to move in between those worlds, creating games that can run on any Apple-branded device, instead of limiting themselves to a single market.

Are you a Mavericks developer? Are you going to use Sprite Kit to create your games? Or do you prefer to use a third-party game engine technology? Let me know.

Cain Velasquez Talks "Hit Like A Girl" Comment From Junior Dos Santos

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez typically isn't referred to as someone that hits like a girl.

However, those are the exact words Junior dos Santos laid on Velasquez following their second meeting. The two collide later this year at UFC 166: Velasquez Vs. Dos Santos 3.

FightHub TV's Marcos Villegas recently caught up with Velasquez and asked him about the dos Santos comment:

Teenagers go the extra mile in golf charity challenge

Teenagers go the extra mile in golf charity challenge

A PAIR of thoughtful teenagers took part in a mammoth four rounds of golf to raise money for charity.

Up-and-coming golfers Brandon Meads, 17, and Sam Ainsbury, 14, who are both members of the Burstead Golf Club, in Billericay, played 72 holes in a bid to raise cash for research into myeloma - a form of cancer.

One of the boys' former coaches, from Billericay, who was in charge of the club's junior section, was recently diagnosed with the disease and they wanted to do something to support the man who helped to turn the fortunes of the once "fading" youth section around.

Brandon's dad Stuart, from Laindon, said: "Hopefully he is on the mend now but Brandon and Sam felt they wanted to give something to this charity to help.

"It really was great golf. I'm really proud of them, for them to decide to do that and then raise this money for charity is brilliant."

The friends set off at 5am on July 25 and only took a break for lunch after playing 36 holes.

Brandon, who is now planning to take a gap year to focus on playing golf at college level in America, is the current club champion, while Sam, from Langdon Hills, who attends St John's School, in Billericay, won the handicap prize in this year's club championship and has really "come on in the last year" Mr Meads said.

Between them the pair have raised more than ?1,000 and donations are still coming in.

FC Barcelona's Xavi pleased with new coach's contributions

FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez lavished praise on new coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, saying Wednesday that he had added some strategic nuances to the team in just two days of practice.

"Tata is a serious, humble, hard-working person with a winning character. He's very communicative and wants a consensus on everything. He's bringing a lot of energy and we're already working on a lot of tactical variants. We'll try to see if we can adapt quickly to him and he can adapt quickly to the club," Xavi said at Barcelona's training grounds.

Bar?a's 33-year-old vice-captain noted the "sad circumstances" under which Martino has taken the helm of the Spanish powerhouse, referring to previous coach Tito Vilanova's decision this summer to step down to focus on his recovery from throat cancer.

"Tito's relapse is some of the worst news of our career and that's why there was a coaching change. But we'll try to overcome that harsh blow to our squad," Xavi added.

He said Bar?a was working on taking the ball of its defensive half, exerting more pressure in the other team's half and increasing its intensity, all those things "we lost" at the end of last season.

The team won its 22nd La Liga title in 2012-2013, but suffered a humiliating 7-0 defeat on aggregate to German club Bayern Munich in the semifinals of the Champions League.

Referring to the addition of Brazilian phenom Neymar, who joined Bar?a this summer after four seasons with Santos, Xavi said he was convinced the 21-year-old striker and Lionel Messi, a four-time world player of the year, would form an outstanding duo.

"The great players make one another better. I'm convinced that Neymar will be better alongside Messi and Messi better alongside Neymar. We'll try to make sure he adapts, he's happy and he performs like he did in Brazil," Xavi said.

Neymar made his Barcelona debut on Tuesday in a pre-season match at Polish club Lechia Gdansk, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw. EFE

Google's New Nexus 7: The Budget Tablet to Beat

Google is launching the new model of its Nexus 7 mini tablet, the competitor to Apple's iPad, that boasts a sharp new screen and a cheaper price-tag than its rival. WSJ's Katherine Boehret says it's a sturdy, elegant, responsive device that users will love.

Does size still matter? Just a year ago, Google introduced its Nexus 7, a mini tablet for $199 that posed a real challenge to Apple's bigger, pricier iPad. Three months later, Apple retaliated with its own small tablet, the iPad Mini, though its $329 price wasn't, well, mini enough for some.

Now, a year after the introduction of the first Nexus 7, Google has unveiled a revamped version of its mini tablet with better features and a slightly bigger $229 price tag.

Starting July 30, this new Nexus 7 is available in a dozen retail outlets including Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Amazon.

I tested it for the past week and found myself drawn to this sturdy, elegant, responsive device from a company once known primarily for its search prowess.

The most notable difference between this new Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini is screen quality: The Nexus has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 with 323 pixels per inch, and the iPad Mini's screen resolution is just 1024 x 768 and 163 pixels per inch. It is also slightly lighter than its Apple rival.

So what's not to like about the new Nexus 7? For one thing, its 7-inch screen isn't as big as the nearly 8-inch iPad Mini's. While an inch of difference isn't remarkable, smartphone screens are growing to over 5 inches, making the Nexus 7 look more like one of those than a tablet.

Another drawback: In my test, the new Nexus 7's battery life was underwhelming. Compared with the same battery test of the iPad Mini and first Nexus 7, it fell short at just six hours; the others clocked in at 10 hours and 27 minutes and 10 hours and 44 minutes, respectively. Google claims the battery life can last over nine hours, but the company tests it in Airplane mode (Internet connection off), with screen brightness set to 44% while playing video. I keep Wi-Fi on in the background and screen brightness at 75% while playing video.

This new mini tablet comes in two sizes that are Wi-Fi-only: a $229 16-gigabyte model and a $269 32-gigabyte model. A version with a built-in LTE Internet connection on Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile will be available in coming weeks for $349 with 32 gigabytes. Meanwhile, Apple's iPad Mini is available in three flavors each of Wi-Fi-only and LTE: 16-, 32- and 64-gigabyte models ranging in price from $329 to $659.

Google

Sorry, kids, no shopping sprees: The new Nexus 7 allows for different restrictions and degrees of access on each user's profile.

The new Nexus 7 runs Android 4.3, the latest iteration of Google's Jelly Bean mobile operating system. While not a major upgrade from the last Jelly Bean release in October, it does add a few new features.

One notable extra is Restricted Profiles. Rather than simply giving you the ability to create multiple user accounts for one tablet, Restricted Profiles allow user accounts with preset restrictions on access to apps and content. I tested this by creating a Restricted Profile named "Pretend Kiddo" in Settings, Users, Add User or Profile. I then went down a list of my device's apps and switched access on or off, according to what I wanted Pretend Kiddo to be able to access. Certain apps in this list clearly say "This app can access your accounts," so you know what you're turning on or off.

Creating a Restricted Profile requires that the primary tablet owner use a lockscreen, so that other users without full access can't get to everything else. In addition to limiting what the Restricted Profile can access, specific app settings, such as in-app purchases and age restrictions, can also be tweaked.

Another new Android feature allows users to play games against friends while keeping track of their achievements using Google Play Games. This is a lot like Game Center on Apple's iOS.

The Nexus 7 also caught up to the iPad Mini in cameras: It now has a built-in rear-facing camera, unlike its predecessor, which only had a front-facing one. Both iPad Mini and new Nexus 7 cameras have the same megapixel counts: 5 megapixels on the rear-facing camera and 1.2 megapixels on the front-facing one. Neither device has a built-in flash.

I snapped photos both indoors and outside in the natural light, and found the outdoor images looked better, though the inside ones were adequate.

I downloaded and watched movies and TV shows on the Nexus 7, admiring its impressively sharp, colorful?albeit smallish?screen, which I usually kept in landscape view. Built-in surround-sound speakers placed on both ends of the tablet emulated a six-speaker system, giving it a rich tone.

At only 0.64 of a pound, this tablet was lightweight enough to hold for long periods without causing my arm to ache. I also found it easy to prop up on kitchen counters and coffee tables because its back and sides aren't slippery.

Google's new Nexus 7 has a lot to offer, if you're looking for a tiny tablet that packs a punch. If you're used to a larger tablet screen, its 7-inch screen size might bug you. But for many people, it will make on-the-go gaming, video watching and reading a delightfully portable experience.
