Teenagers go the extra mile in golf charity challenge

Teenagers go the extra mile in golf charity challenge

A PAIR of thoughtful teenagers took part in a mammoth four rounds of golf to raise money for charity.

Up-and-coming golfers Brandon Meads, 17, and Sam Ainsbury, 14, who are both members of the Burstead Golf Club, in Billericay, played 72 holes in a bid to raise cash for research into myeloma - a form of cancer.

One of the boys' former coaches, from Billericay, who was in charge of the club's junior section, was recently diagnosed with the disease and they wanted to do something to support the man who helped to turn the fortunes of the once "fading" youth section around.

Brandon's dad Stuart, from Laindon, said: "Hopefully he is on the mend now but Brandon and Sam felt they wanted to give something to this charity to help.

"It really was great golf. I'm really proud of them, for them to decide to do that and then raise this money for charity is brilliant."

The friends set off at 5am on July 25 and only took a break for lunch after playing 36 holes.

Brandon, who is now planning to take a gap year to focus on playing golf at college level in America, is the current club champion, while Sam, from Langdon Hills, who attends St John's School, in Billericay, won the handicap prize in this year's club championship and has really "come on in the last year" Mr Meads said.

Between them the pair have raised more than ?1,000 and donations are still coming in.
