What we are doing today attempting to secure the Internet environment is not working and we may be headed for a point at which people won?t do business onine because it isn?t trustworthy enough. So says Purdue security researcher Eugene Spafford.
Spafford told Government Computer News that trying to keep bloated, bug swarmed legacy IT systems running is diverting attention from developing better ways to protect hardware and software.
A professor of computer science and founding director of Purdue?s Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), Spafford says the government can?t direct a solution to this problem from Washington, because ?It is embedded in too many businesses and homes.?
Something that works needs to be done, Spafford says, before it stalls business on the Internet. ?People move out of neighborhoods when they aren?t safe,? he says.
We have long argued that the way businesses seem to be handling security now ? panic when hackers steal reams of personal information? rather than pro-active security that prevents intrusions in the first place ? is not a winning strategy. It?s not as if we?re talking about Mickey Mouse organizations here, although their approach to security is apparently cartoon-like.
Companies affected by massive security breaches this year, as if our readers need to be told, included Sony?s Playstation network, CitiBank, and other major organizations. These breaches are already eroding consumer trust according to a recent SailPoint survey.

Don?t miss TechMedia?s upcoming fall Digital events ? where a few thousand senior marketers, web strategists and Internet executives will converge.
Digital East: Washington, DC in September and Internet Summit: Raleigh, NC in November.
