Chris Wallace Calls Out GOP on Govt. Shutdown: Are You 'Prepared to Shoot' the Hostage?

Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday called the Republican Party's bluff and asked if lawmakers were prepared to "shoot the hostage" and shut down the federal government if President Barack Obama refused to defund his healthcare reform law.

During a talk with the conservative Heritage Foundation last week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) suggested that Obama and Democrats, not Republicans, would be to blame if the government was shut down.

"Under no circumstances will I support a continuing resolution that funds even one penny of Obamacare," Cruz explained. "The next step will be that President Obama and [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid will scream and yell, ?Why are those mean and nasty Republicans threatening to shut down the government over Obamacare???

?We?ve got to stand up and make the argument and win the argument that, ?No, that?s not true. We have voted to fund the federal government. We want to fund the federal government. Why is President Obama threatening to shut down the federal government? Because he wants force Obamacare down people?s throats.??

On Sunday, Wallace told Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint that some of his fellow Republicans had called that idea "suicidal" and "the dumbest idea I've ever heard."

"What about the Republicans who say it's crazy to hold the government funding hostage?" Wallace wondered.

"This is a very destructive law that's going to hurt our country, it's going to hurt a lot of people," DeMint insisted. "This may be the last opportunity to stop it. Now, there's no Republican that I'm aware of that wants to shut the government down. The whole point is we need to fund the government, but we should not fund Obamacare."

"But, Senator, what they say, you know, is you don't take a hostage unless you're prepared to shoot him," Wallace pointed out. "And if you're going to go down this road, are you prepared to shut down the government? Because the Democrats are not going to go along with this."

"I wouldn't shut down the government, but if Obama would not accept a funding bill for the government, that fully funds the government, because it didn't have his failed law in it then he would be shutting down the government," DeMint opined. "And that's the case we're going to take to the American people in August."

Inhabitat's Week in Green: zero-distortion mirror, stem cell hamburger and a tent that fits in a sneaker

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

It's been a big week for planes, trains and automobiles as California (finally) announced plans to break ground on the US' first high-speed rail and we speculated on just how Elon Musk's 600MPH Hyperloop train will work. Inhabitat also brought you the scoop on BMW's 2014 i3, which is the world's first electric vehicle made mostly from carbon fiber. Green vehicles proved they could go the distance as a 65-year-old man embarked on a 1,200-mile journey in a solar-powered tricycle, and a crop of green-roofed buses brought lush air-purifying plants to congested city centers. And if you're planning an outdoor adventure this summer, you won't want to miss this caravan that doubles as a boat, Mini's new ultra compact luxury campers and the full-sized tent that fits in a pair of sneakers.

5 Great American White-Water Rafting Destinations

August 4, 2013 10:00 AM Text Size: A . A . A White-water rafting can be a great summer escapade, and it's easy to tailor a trip for your crew. For families with young children, a tame river might be the best option. To jolt the teens, rivers akin to crazy roller-coaster rides are the way to go. You can organize a trip to fit any time frame too: overnight outings, day trips, half-day trips, or just an easy float.

First you need to learn the lingo. Here's a quick guide to the kinds of rapids:

? Class I is a nice, gentle ride. This is good for rafters who prefer to float at a leisurely pace.
? Class II involves mild rapids and waves up to 3 feet tall. These rivers are fairly easy to move around in.
? Class III is where the excitement starts to build. There's a good chance of getting wet because waves can be up to 4 feet tall.
? Class IV is not for the faint of heart. Passages are constricted, rapids are long and challenging, and the rafting guide has to operate the craft precisely.
? Class V is like Class IV and then some. It's a pure adrenaline rush.

Some of the best U.S. rivers for a rapids adventures include:

? The American River in California. This river is located in the oak-studded Sierra Nevada foothills. The South Fork of the American River, which flows into the Sacramento River, is a great section for beginners. For a bit more topsy-turvy action, the Middle Fork boasts a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids. It's set in a canyon 2000 feet deep and is surrounded by numerous historic sites from the gold rush era.
? The Colorado River near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While 4 million people visit the Grand Canyon every year, fewer than 22,000 go white-water rafting in Arizona. Rafters can float through Grand Canyon National Park, starting just below Lake Powell and ending at Lake Mead. This stretch of water offers a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids.
? The Salmon River in Idaho. The Lower and Middle Forks of the Salmon are part of a 100-mile-plus course that has beginner and intermediate rapids. The lower section is especially suited for kids. With milder rapids and sandy beaches, many families love this wildlife adventure.
? The Chattooga River in Georgia and South Carolina. This river features three sections: sections II, III, and IV, which correspond with the class of rapids in each portion. Section II is relaxing. The surroundings are steeped in Native American history and feature an array of wildlife. Section III provides more action and is more challenging, with some serious rapids.
? Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. This is a great 74-mile river that's within reach for East Coast residents. Sections of the river are calm enough for small children, offering a relaxing float. Other parts offer up more white-water exploits for intermediate and advanced rafters. Another plus: The season is on the long side, generally lasting from April to September.

Would-be rafters should always check with guiding companies to confirm when trips are offered and to note any age requirements. Most rafting outfitters have a guide on each raft. Life jackets and helmets are usually required, and some companies offer wet suits during the colder spring months.

Iranians may have abducted Briton in Dubai - government source

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is taking seriously allegations that a British-Iranian citizen who went missing in Dubai in June may have been kidnapped by "elements in Iran", a government source in London said on Saturday.

Abbas Yazdi was reported missing on June 25 and his wife Atena has told Dubai-based news website 7Days that she fears he may have been kidnapped by Iranian intelligence officers.

"We believe that allegations that elements in Iran might be responsible for Mr Yazdi's disappearance are plausible, and we are taking them very seriously," the source told Reuters.

The Foreign Office said it was in contact with the authorities in Dubai and in Iran about the case and was providing consular assistance to Yazdi's family.

"We have asked the Iranians for any information they have about Mr Yazdi's whereabouts," a spokeswoman said.

"We are very concerned about Mr Yazdi's welfare."

Foreign Secretary William Hague raised Yazdi's disappearance with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi during a telephone conversation on July 31.

Britain is among Western nations at odds with Iran over its nuclear programme and other issues. It shut its embassy in Tehran after what it called "an attack by government-sponsored militias" on the mission in November 2011. Iran's embassy in London was also closed.

The 7Days website cited Yazdi's wife as saying the 44-year-old trader and investor was a close childhood friend of the son of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Atena Yazdi was quoted as saying that her husband had been detained in Iran in 1993 and held in solitary confinement by the intelligence service for six months. He had later travelled to London and obtained British citizenship, she said.

The couple had moved to Dubai 10 years ago, 7Days said.

The Foreign Office spokeswoman declined to comment on the details of the report or to release any details about Yazdi's background.

U.S. judge denies class certification sought by women suing Wal-Mart

By Casey Sullivan and Dan Levine

(Reuters) - In another setback for women suing Wal-Mart, a U.S. judge in San Francisco on Friday rejected an attempt to bring reformulated sex discrimination claims against the company as a class action.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer denied a motion for class certification brought by plaintiffs seeking to represent 150,000 women in Wal-Mart's California offices who alleged the world's largest retailer denied them pay raises and promotions because of their gender.

The claims were filed as a reformulated lawsuit after the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a larger class-action sex discrimination against Wal-Mart Stores Inc in 2011 that claimed female employees at 3,400 Walmart stores nationwide were underpaid and given fewer promotions.

The California lawsuit was part of a broader strategy by women Wal-Mart workers to bring more narrowly tailored class actions in an attempt to seek damages, targeting Wal-Mart's employment practices in regions throughout the country.

Instead of relying on nationwide statistical patterns and anecdotal evidence provided by plaintiffs, the California lawsuit had alleged specific discriminatory statements made by the district and regional managers that have decision-making authority over pay and promotions.

Breyer said in his ruling that the women could not bring their allegations as a class action because they had not established that their claims of the company's employment practice were linked to a class-wide policy.

But he said: "This order does not consider whether plaintiffs themselves were victims of discrimination as alleged in their complaint; those individual claims shall proceed in this litigation."

Still, Breyer took issue with some of the merits of the plaintiffs case. For one, he said that the women did not identify statistically significant disparities in pay and promotion decisions throughout the California regions at issue.

Breyer also noted that the women said they had anecdotes reflecting stereotyped views expressed by a number of regional managers, but only offered evidence of bias exhibited by about five percent of the top level management that they say guided lower-level decisions.

"Though plaintiffs succeeded in illustrating attitudes of gender bias held by managers at Wal-Mart, they failed to marshal significant proof that intentional discrimination was a general policy affecting the entire class," Breyer said.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said in a statement that the company has had a strong policy against discrimination in place for many years, and that the allegations from the plaintiffs were not representative of the positive experiences of other women working at Wal-Mart.

"Judge Breyer gave the plaintiffs every opportunity to offer any evidence they wanted, and their evidence comes up short," said Theodore Boutrous, a lawyer representing Wal-Mart. "We are gratified."

Randy Renick, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a statement that plaintiffs were "deeply disappointed" with the court's decision and intended to appeal the ruling.

"While this court decision does not in any way negate the merits of the pay and promotion discrimination case against Wal-Mart, it does create yet another hurdle for these women to at long last have their day in court," he said.
